No matter how many times I visit my workshop in Northern India, I am overwhelmed by color. The visual impact is profound, from a myriad of brilliant saris and dupatas (long scarves) blowing in the desert wind, tempting trays of sapphires, rubies, emeralds and other richly colored gemstones at my dealer’s office, the intricately carved jharoka windows of the pink sandstone buildings in the old city of Jaipur, to the multi-hued flowers and fruit trees in desert oases. This is Rajasthan and its capital city, Jaipur.
